Snowdrop  Galanthus nivalis

Image © David Paloch

Named from the Greek ‘gala’=milk ‘anthos’=flower, the snowdrop is native to a wide area of Europe, from the Pyrenees to Ukraine, France Poland and Italy.  Often thought of as a British native, it was probably introduced in the 16th century.

Celebrated as a first sign of  spring, snowdrops were especially early during the warm period this winter.

The plant contains the alkaloid anticholinesterase galanthamine from which is made Reminyl, a drug used to treat Alzheimer’s disease; although I can’t remember where I read that.

Kirkmaiden is a parish in  the South Rhinns of Galloway, South West Scotland, incorporating the villages of Drummore and Port Logan and the hamlet of Kirkmaiden.

Kirkmaiden Natural History Group is based in Drummore.  We hold indoor meetings monthly and run field outings throughout the year .

The Group is indebted to the dedication, knowledge and expertise of founder-member Pauline Swettenham, without whose encouragement we may well not have got going.
